ABSTRACT

Stress and discrimination negatively affect quality of life, but social support may buffer their effects. This study aims: (1) to examine the associations between psychological stress, discrimination, and oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL); and (2) to assess whether social support, stress and discrimination interact to modify their associations with OHRQoL. We used cross-sectional household-based data from a study including 396 individuals aged 14 years and over from families registered for government social benefits in a city in Southern Brazil. OHRQoL was measured with the Oral Impacts on Daily Performance (OIDP) scale; psychological stress was assessed with the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS); social support was assessed based on the number of close relatives or friends of the participant, and discrimination was assessed with a short version of the Everyday Discrimination Scale. Interactions were estimated using the relative excess of risk due to interaction (RERI). Adjusted effects were calculated with logistic regression. The prevalence of oral impacts among people with higher and lower PSS scores was 81.6% and 65.5%, respectively (p < 0.01). Social support was found to have no interactions with stress levels and discrimination. The association between social discrimination and OHRQoL (OIDP score > 0) was OR = 2.03 (95%CI: 1.23; 3.34) among people with a low level of stress, but was OR = 12.6 (95%CI: 1.31; 120.9) among those with higher levels (p = 0.09, for interaction). Individuals who reported experiencing higher levels of psychological stress and discrimination had worse OHRQoL; a synergistic effect with social support was not clear.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

Carrying a high weight is a characteristic that has been devalued and socially denigrated, turning people with large bodies into victims of stereotypes, prejudice, or discrimination, which has been called weight stigmatisation, a phenomenon that occurs especially in women. The aim of this study was to describe the weight stigma experiences of women with obesity who live in southern Chile. Six women between 20 and 57 years of age participated in semi-structured interviews conducted remotely. Through Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis four supra-themes and several sub-themes were identified, the supra-themes are: 1. Obesity as part of the person. 2. Experiences of feeling discriminated. 3. Everything is about weight. 4. what society thinks of obesity, which together allow characterising the experience of living with obesity and suffering the weight stigma in different areas of their lives, including in health contexts. The consequences of this experience are diverse and negative, highlighting the impact it has on their self-esteem and the constant negative emotions that derive from discrimination situations. These results highlight the importance of moving toward body diversity and acceptance, which is a challenge for society in general and health care providers in particular, as it requires interventions free from prejudice and orientated to the health and well-being of individuals.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Discrimination affects the health and well-being of those who experience it. The relationship between discrimination and mental health in migrant communities and in the Chilean child and youth population has been previously studied, however, there is little evidence regarding the effects of discrimination on the general population. Objective: To analyze the relationship between discrimination and the presence of anxious and depressive symptoms in the Chilean population. Methods: Prospective cross-sectional study evaluating 927 subjects in the cities of Arica, Antofagasta, and Santiago. To evaluate discrimination the Krieger Discrimination Experience Scale is used. To asses depressive and anxious symptomatology, the Beck scales for BDI Depression and BAI Anxiety were implemented. Results: The mean age of the sample is 33.9 years (Range 18-70 years; SD=13.13). 59.5% of the participants are female. 36% of the participants reported having experienced discrimination in some aspect of their lives. The highest perception of discrimination is associated with employment (42%) and the main reported causes are level of education or income, age, and gender. Experiences of discrimination exert statistically significant positive effects of moderate magnitude (b>.30) on depressive (b=.460, p<.001) and anxious (b=.480, p<.001) symptomatology, the latter being interrelated (b=.636, p<.001). Conclusions: More than a third of the population studied reported having been discriminated in some aspect of their lives. This perception is further accentuated in relation to employment. The perception of discrimination is associated with an increase in anxious and depressive symptoms in the Chilean population.

ABSTRACT

Cisgender lesbian women face situations of double violence in their daily lives with situations of double violence, related to the disqualification and devaluation attributed to both gender and sexual orientation. This study aimed to understand the meanings attributed to middle-class lesbian women's experiences of prejudice and discrimination. This is a clinical qualitative study based on the intersectional look of gender studies. Six white, middle-class women ages 22 to 59, who self-identified as lesbians, participated. Individual interviews were conducted and recorded to create the analysis corpus. The data were analyzed and discussed from the perspective of reflective thematic analysis. Five categories were constructed: work environment, family of origin, friendship relations, health services, and unknown people. The results show that people who perpetrate violence against lesbians do not tolerate the possibility that two women can have an affective-sexual relationship and use erasure strategies (insults, debauchery, disrespect, indifference) to depreciate, invisibilize them, and discriminate against them. The recurrent attacks on lesbianities have the function of maintaining the hegemony of the heterocentric model. Examining the meanings attributed to the experiences of prejudice and discrimination suffered by lesbian women can encourage the development of culturally sensitive interventions and public policies targeting this population.

ABSTRACT

Abstract This article applies the concept of normality, in both its descriptive and normative connotations, to the field of mental health, emphasizing its ethical undertones in different cultural and situational contexts. Ethics is defined as the linguistic justification of morals, and bioethics is characterized by arguments based on dialogical, discursive, and deliberative processes. Bioethical decision-making influences human relationships and has implications for diagnosis, prognosis, interventions, and evaluation of therapeutic results and outcomes. Normality in mental health should be reformulated on bioethical principles to avoid being a source of stigma and discrimination, at a time when human diversity and cultural change impose a redefinition of conceptual boundaries and depathologization of different forms of behavior and experience.

ABSTRACT

(AU)

The perceptual discrimination of symbols depends on the perceptual organization of the individual as a complex bio-psychosocial system in action. Objective: To study the specifics of perceptual discrimination of symbols in students with learning difficulties. Sample: 550 participants - 275 with learning difficulties and 275 without; aged 7 to 15; educational levels ranging from the 1st to 3rd cycles of basic education. Methodological instruments included clinical-psychological interviews, psychological observations, and the Symbols Digit Modalities Test (SDMT). Results: Students with learning difficulties tend to display more incorrect and fewer correct digit-symbol pairings, and they invest considerably more time in task execution. Consequently, they achieve fewer correct pairings per minute compared to students without learning difficulties. Conclusion: Learning difficulties are associated with increased errors and fewer correct pairings in the task of pairing symbols when time constraints exist. Conversely, when ample time is available, it mitigates the quantity of inaccuracies. Learning difficulties necessitate more time for task completion due to slower information processing. The time spent on decoding, identifying digit-symbol correspondences, and perceptual discrimination does not align with the speed required for simultaneity and automation of the task. (AU)

ABSTRACT

This paper offers an empirical and conceptual exploration of the dental chart, a tool used to assess dental status. It is built on the "ontological turn" and recent affect theories to reflect beyond the epistemological concept of representation. This paper aims to understand the material, embodied, and affective relationships implemented in dental training regarding the dental chart. A dental education program in an intermediate city in Colombia was taken as a case study, mainly what happened in clinical practices and faculty meetings. It adopted the notion of "ethnographic moment" proposed by Marilyn Strathern for the analysis. Diverse situations were observed, which demonstrated the capacity of the dental chart to articulate affects, such as discussing conventions, filling out clinical records using a pencil, moving the chair of the dental unit to see the teeth, drying with the triple syringe, explaining subtle differences between anatomy and pathology, and evaluating the dental charts carried out by the students. It was inferred that the relationship between the patient's mouth and the dental chart is complex and mutually excessive, enabling a richer experience of the teeth.

ABSTRACT

This study aimed to replicate the study of Hayashi et al. (2013) and to assess the emergence of letter naming from the teaching of auditory-visual pairing, in the context of remote teaching, in view of the Covid-19 pandemic. Four students, of both genders, aged five to ten years, three of them with Down syndrome and one participant with Autistic Spectrum Disorder participated in the research. Data collection was performed using the Zoom platform, individually. Teaching consisted of the selection of the printed capital letter, presented on the computer screen simultaneously the printed letters of the set, and the letter name dictated. In the evaluation, the child named the letter. A design of multiple probes between sets of letters was used. The results showed that all four participants showed an increase in correct letter naming after the teaching sessions for most letter sets. The data indicated that the teaching procedure can be a viable alternative to establish the recognition and naming of letters with people who are the target audience of Special Education, supplementing regular school teaching and can be conducted by teachers and family members

ABSTRACT

The selection of personnel has proven to be an invaluable procedure for organizations. However, in practice employers often (and prefer) to use the selection methods of scarce and questionable evidence. In the Bolivian context, the use of personal questions related to age, marital status, sex, race, pregnancy, among others, seems to be quite widespread. Although the usefulness that justifies its inclusion remains unproven. In this article, I analyze the relevance and support of personal questions based on their contribution to three purposes of personnel selection: validity to predict job performance, recruitment, and discrimination. Finally, I provide some suggestions: (1) to improve the efficiency of the selection processes, and (2) to amend and strengthen the laws against discrimination in the selection of Bolivian labor law.

ABSTRACT

Abstract Introduction Acoustic change complex (ACC) is a type of event-related potential evoked in response to subtle change(s) in the continuing stimuli. In the presence of a growing number of investigations on ACC, there is a need to review the various methodologies, findings, clinical utilities, and conclusions of different studies by authors who have studied ACC. Objectives The present review article is focused on the literature related to the utility of ACC as a tool to assess the auditory discrimination skill in different populations. Data Synthesis Various database providers, such as Medline, Pubmed, Google, and Google Scholar, were searched for any ACC-related reference. A total of 102 research papers were initially obtained using descriptors such as acoustic change complex, clinical utility of ACC, ACC in children, ACC in cochlear implant users, and ACC in hearing loss. The titles, authors, and year of publication were examined, and the duplicates were eliminated. A total of 31 research papers were found on ACC and were incorporated in the present review. The findings of these 31 articles were reviewed and have been reported in the present article. Conclusions The present review showed the utility of ACC as an objective tool to support various subjective tests in audiology.

ABSTRACT

In terms of family law, Peruvian legislation contemplates the possibility of shared custody, expressly regulated in the Code of Children and Adolescents, without establishing details on the conditions and forms of application, which is similar in comparative law. Based on bioethical and legal principles, this article analyses the possibility of generating a special regulation for shared custody, focusing on the need to establish special criteria that judges can take into account in specific cases involving children. These criteria should be based on a social model aimed at breaking down the barriers imposed, providing the most appropriate conditions for an integral and full development. In this line of thought, the best interests of the child, the commitment of the parents and the implementation of reasonable accommodations are fundamental.

ABSTRACT

Abstract We investigated whether racial discrimination accelerates the weight and Body Mass Index (BMI) gain in Blacks and Browns participants of the Brazilian Longitudinal Study of Adult Health (ELSA-Brasil) in four years of follow-up. We compared body weight and BMI between the 1st (2008-2010) and 2nd visit (2012-2014) of 5,983 Blacks and Browns participants. Exposure to racial discrimination and covariates (age, sex, education, and research center) were obtained at the 1st visit. Linear mixed effects models stratified by race/skin color were used. Report of racial discrimination was more frequent among Blacks (32.1%) than Browns (6.3%). During the follow-up period, Blacks and Browns gained an average of 1.4kg and 1.2kg, respectively. This increase was greater among those who reported discrimination when compared to those who did not, both in Blacks (2.1kg vs.1.0kg, p < 0.001) and Browns (1.9kg vs. 1.1kg, p < 0.05). The results of the interaction between racial discrimination and time showed that Blacks, but not Browns, who reported racial discrimination had greater weight and BMI gains between visits. Our results suggest that reducing racial discrimination would contribute to prevent and/or control obesity increase in the country.

ABSTRACT

Se utilizaron los descriptores "Psychological/Social Discrimination", "Racism", "Social Stigma", "Social Determinants of Health", "Public Health", "Health Equity", "Transients and Migrants", "Refugees", "Emigrants and Immigrants", "Undocumented Immigrants", "Child", "Adolescent", "Child, "Preschool". Los operadores booleanos utilizados fueron AND y OR.

Objective: To analyze the relationship between Social Determinants of Health (SDH) and racial discrimination in migrant children and adolescents, based on the information available in the scientific literature. Method: Narrative review of primary studies published between 2008 and 2021 in PubMed and Web of Science databases. The descriptors "Psychological/Social Discrimination", "Racism", "Social Stigma", "Social Determinants of Health", "Public Health", "Health Equity", "Transients and Migrants", "Refugees", "Emigrants and Immigrants", "Undocumented Immigrants", "Child", "Adolescent", "Child", "Preschool" were using. The Boolean operators used were AND OR. We included observational articles (analytical or descriptive) that evaluated the relationship between racial discrimination and SDH, published in English or Spanish. The study population was children and adolescents. We select articles following the PRISMA recommendations. The evaluation of the quality of the evidence was made using MMAT. Results: Of a total of 1249 articles identified, 55 articles were included. The most significant number of articles identified the relationship between racial discrimination and migration on adverse mental health outcomes. Evidence regarding structural determinants was scarce; however, the relationship between racial discrimination and the moderating effect of family and school stands out. Conclusions: Analyzing racial discrimination as perceived by migrant children through a DSS approach allows us to identify sensitive areas to develop strategies to reduce inequities in this group.

ABSTRACT

Abstract This research aims to capture occupational segregation and wage discrimination by gender in the University of Cauca, located in southwestern Colombia, during four periods (2005, 2010, 2015 y 2020). There are few studies in this direction, and the existing ones do not address it in depth, at least in emerging countries. In this sense, it is the first time it has been done for Colombian higher education institutions. The methodology is quantitative and it implements the Karmel and MacLachlan Index (KM) in the first case and the Kitagawa-Oaxaca-Blinder (KOB) decomposition in the second one. To deepen the analysis panel data information was used for the first time in the KOB decomposition for these issues, which allows evaluating the evolution of segregation over time. The variables analysed include gender, wage, age, years of experience, education level, administrative charges, and academic departments of origin, among others. The information used comes from the official data provided by the Administrative Office of the University of Cauca. This is characterized by being totally anonymous and by exclusively comprising full-time teachers, that is, those with an indefinite term contract. Temporal teachers and/or professors with a defined term contract are excluded, due to the volatility in the employment relationship, which would otherwise introduce noise into the analysis. In general, the information shows that alpha professions (better paid, with greater projection and public recognition) have been dominated in the last five years by professors; while beta professions (that is those with lower salaries, little projection and recognition) have been led by women. This preliminary result leads to consider that there is labor and/or wage segregation within this university. The estimates of the KM index showed, firstly, that all professions, both alpha and beta, have at least some segregation in the period analysed, since this is greater than zero. Second, segregation has been low and slightly decreasing over time for beta professions. In fact, it was 0.09 in 2005 and 0.072 in 2020. Third, for alpha professions, the index has been markedly increasing over time, which suggests that the proportion of female teachers who must change professions so that segregation from men was zero is increasing. Regarding wage discrimination, all the differences were negative, which shows that the average salaries of female teachers are lower than those of male teachers and therefore their difference is less than zero. Although the results are only statistically significant for the years 2011, 2014 and 2020, it can be highlighted that these differentials have been decreasing over time. In effect, it was -0.24 log-wage in 2005 and -0.051 log-wage in 2020. These results are partially in line with those obtained in the KM index. Occupational and salary segregation seems to have decreased slightly in recent years in this university, but it still exists. In the case of decomposition change, all the variations in the endowment are positive and significant but are characterized as decreasing, which indicates that changes in average wage differentials have been narrowing over time. The empirical evidence suggest that occupational segregation still occurs in beta professions traditionally occupied by women despite the low perception of job discrimination by university professors. As for alpha occupations, they maintain male hegemony. The observable characteristics mean that there are differences in the wage modification between male and female teachers, but this is becoming less strong due to the increase in the education level and the decrease in the number of children. There are unobserved discriminatory factors that maintain female wage discrimination in response to cultural factors rooted in the patriarchy and traditionalism of the region where the university is located.

ABSTRACT

Abstract The human rights of the trans population are violated because of heterocispatriarchy and the social representations generated, promoted, and reinforced by this hegemonic system. The objective of this article is to describe the social representations that students of a graduate program in psychology at a private university in Cali have about trans persons, as well as the needs and challenges they perceive in their professional work with this population. This is a qualitative, phenomenological-interpretative study, in which 45 students of the Sexual Health and Reproductive Health course voluntarily participated. The data were collected by natural semantic networks and discussion groups and were processed from the thematic analysis theory. The research conforms to the principles of beneficence, non-maleficence, and autonomy. Likewise, it is based on accumulated knowledge under strict methodological rigor. It was classified as research with minimal risk. The social representations of some participants about trans persons are associated with stigmatizing and excluding aspects, which can be positively transformed in the interaction with the community in question. It is concluded that social representations play a fundamental role in the quality of health care. It is important to train health and social science students in sexuality, human interactions, self-care, respect for others and for oneself, as well as decision-making skills, assertive communication, critical thinking, and conflict resolution from a transaffirmative, gender and rights-based approach.

ABSTRACT

Life in the 21 Century has changed, developed albeit rather slowly evolved to a higher dimension with the advancement of technology and education. However, one thing that has been dragged from the medieval ages into this new era is the status of women in the society. Women in the new eon are still ill-treated, and it is not astonishing at all. However, when a deep study of the subject is made in history, we understand that it is surprisingly a newer concept. In the ancient India, somewhere around the Vedic period, women were respected and valued highly in the society. A woman could fight wars, take part in philosophical discussions, join in festivals along with men, or even remain unmarried if she desired so. So, how and why did such concepts of inequality and discrimination arose in the past are interesting studies which are yet less-known to people. Later on, around the eleventh century, women lost these perks, and consequently their status in the society due to some social, political and economic changes. The rise in evil customs and traditions like female feticide, dowry deaths, sexual assault, rape enslaved women to the boundaries of their houses. Women were mentally threatened and emotionally handcuffed from being active participants of discussions, hence their role in the society became passive in nature. The process of reawakening of the human conscience begun in the 19th Century. Reformers like Raja Ram Mohan Roy and Swami Dayanand threw light on the need of eliminating all forms of gender discrimination and biasedness. The logic behind this activation of mind was simple- without women, life on the planet wouldn't have sustained. A woman is the source of creation, she bears a child and hence the progeny maintains the continuum of life. For the species to survive, both the genders were to be conserved equally. Hence, the society started acknowledging this perspective of mind, though with a steadier pace this time. This change wasn't easy to accept for most of the people who now considered men to be on the cliff, i.e. above and higher than a woman's st position. This paper displays the status of women and her empowerment in the 21 Century in all aspects of life due to the rise in education.

ABSTRACT

Abstract This article aims to estimate the prevalence of self-reported discrimination against people with hearing loss in Brazilian health services and analyze associated factors. We conducted a cross-sectional population-based study using data from the 2013 National Health Survey. The final study sample comprised 1,464 individuals with self-reported hearing loss. Poisson regression was used to calculate crude and adjusted prevalence ratios (PR) and respective 95% confidence intervals. The overall prevalence of discrimination was 15%. Prevalence was higher among black people and respondents who reported experiencing limitations in activities of daily living. Prevalence of discrimination in Brazilian health services was highest in black people with limitations in activities of daily living. The implementation of policies and actions to address this problem is recommended, including strategies during the education and training of health professionals.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT Purpose To compare the frequency of vocal fold opening variation, analyzed by digital kymography, with the fundamental voice frequency obtained by acoustic analysis, in individuals without laryngeal alteration. Methods Observational analytical cross-sectional study. The participants were forty-eight women and 38 men from 18 to 55 years of age. The evaluation was made by voice acoustic analysis, by the habitual emission of the vowel /a/ for 3 seconds, and days of the week, and digital kymography (DKG), by the habitual emission of the vowels /i/ and /ɛ/. The measurements analyzed were acoustic fundamental frequency (f0), extracted by the Computerized Speech Lab (CSL) program, and dominant frequency of the variation of right (R-freq) and left (L-freq) vocal fold opening, obtained through the KIPS image processing program. The mounting of the kymograms consisted in the manual demarcation of the region by vertical lines delimiting width and horizontal lines separating the posterior, middle and anterior thirds of the Rima glottidis. In the statistical analysis, the Anderson-Darling test was used to verify the normality of the sample. The ANOVA and Tukey tests were performed for the comparison of measurements between the groups. For the comparison of age between the groups, the Mann-Whitney test was used. Results There are no differences between the values of the frequency measurement analyzed by digital kymography, with the acoustic fundamental frequency, in individuals without laryngeal alteration. Conclusion The values of the dominant frequency of the vocal folds opening variation, as assessed by digital kymography, and the acoustic fundamental frequency of the voice are similar, allowing comparison between these measurements in the multidimensional evaluation of the voice, in individuals without laryngeal alteration.
